Why does this workspace field have a value we did not select?

To see if your workspace is setup to use a Default Value for a specific field, open the workspace in edit mode. Select the field in question and then click on Default Value on the ribbon's Design tab. There is one option called "From Workspace". If this is selected, then the workspace will use the value which was pre-selected on that field in edit mode. If this is not selected, then this field is not using the Default Value option.

If you would like a field to use the Default Value option, then select "From Workspace" while the field is selected and this allows you to then choose the default value you want for that field. If it is a menu item, then you can select a value from the menu item. Otherwise you can type in the value, into the field, to be used as that field's default value. 

Keep in mind that once you add workspace rules, it will override this default setting, if the conditions of the rule are met.
