Is is possible to change the type of an existing field in a Custom Object?

Environment:

All Sites, Custom Objects

Issue:

The field type in a custom object is locked, and cannot be changed.

Resolution:

Once a field has been deployed, the type and field usage are locked, and cannot be changed.
