Environment:
Custom fields, Oracle B2C Service, All Supported versions
Resolution:
Important! It is common best practice to make custom field modifications only during off-peak hours. When custom fields are edited, actions must be performed against the corresponding database table. During the time of the updates, the records in the table may be inaccessible due to underlying locks. As a result, your staff members may not be able to open or save records associated with the table that is locked.
In order to rename a custom field:
1. Click the Configuration button on the navigation pane; 2. Double-click Custom Fields under Database. The content pane displays the Custom Fields tree; 3. Changing the value in the 'Name' field modifies the corresponding database label. Each language can have a different label. For interfaces that have the same language as the primary interface, the 'Label' field will always match the menu item 'Name' field. 4. Changing the value in the 'Column Name' field modifies the underlying database schema. You cannot use spaces or punctuation, and the value cannot start with a number. The column name in the database will be appended with the prefix c$. For example, if you add a custom field with the column name calling_plan, it will appear in the database as c$calling_plan.
The impact on your site depends on the fields you are trying to rename. For example:
- If you modify the Name/ Label of a custom field, objects that use that label will be automatically updated and the new name will be displayed (ex. workspaces). - If you modify the Column Name of a custom field, this changes the underlying database schema and objects that use a reference to the old schema will break. For example, the custom field will be visually removed from workspaces (as there is no longer a valid reference). As such, it will be necessary to update the workspace manually and add a reference to the renamed field.
