What is the limitation in the number of merge fields that can be used in message templates?

There is a limit on the number of merge fields that can be used in a single message template. The current limit is 128 fields.
If 128 fields is exceeded in a single template, following the 128th field will not populate as expected, and will display the default value. The customer may be able to configure a work around that uses merge reports in order to accommodate additional merged information.
