I was asked to write a blog about our upgrade of PHP in Service Cloud August 2016. Easy enough, I thought, I’ve written hundreds of blogs and they usually just about write themselves. And as you may have noticed in past blogs, I try hard to make them funny/pithy/anecdotal/memorable. Who doesn’t like a joke once in a while, right?
Sadly, this time isn’t one of those times. For the life of me I can’t find a single good joke or anecdote about PHP. Go ahead, try Googling ‘PHP joke’ or even ‘PHP comic’; I predict you will be as disappointed as I was.
So I guess I’m going to give you the news without an anesthetic:
With the release of Oracle Service Cloud August 2016, we will be upgrading our support of PHP to version 5.6.18. There are a few more details in the General Announcement but there are just 2 critical things to know: in the coming months we will be updating your site’s PHP code to be PHP 5.6-ready and, once we’ve done that, your PHP developers need to keep doing that in the future (they might find the Technical Release Notes useful in this regard).
Yeah, I agree, that sort of news usually tastes better if it’s served with a little more seasoning. Sorry about that. But at least your ‘to dos’ are pretty simple: make sure you tell your PHP developers that all future Service Cloud customizations need to be PHP 5.6-friendly. Easy enough, I hope, since it’s been around a while (and the changes have been around even longer).
Finally, if you know any good PHP jokes, $conclusion = “I’m all ears”.
